I’ve made sure that the light was always indicating that it was on. So here’s what I saw when I pulled the plates to clean them after 20 months. I found very little had collected. VERY little. It may have collected that much even with it completely unplugged. I’ve had electrostatic air filters in the past. Here’s the comparison. I did some hobby work with carbon fiber, in tiny amounts, and the filter would always “snap” or “pop” as soon as I opened the Hefty zip lock bag. It was uncanny how fast those fibers can move everywhere so fast, but anyway, this proves it was working properly. It’s just that it doesn’t collect much dust, mold spores or pollen. I didn’t even find the carbon fiber. It may have blasted those to bits. But it should have at least collected some mold and pollen, which it did not. This unit failed its primary function, so there is no other factor or parameter of interest except its cost. Since it failed as a filter and wasn’t free, it’s a bad deal and I cannot recommend this to anyone. Maybe I need to contact Honeywell and try to find out if it’s actually been broken this whole time. However, this is wishful thinking because it has a “test” button, I push it, it gives me one weak pop. I’m pretty sure that means it’s good- to- go as far as Honeywell is concerned. Still, maybe if I call, they’ll replace it or something (not likely). Maybe they can tell me how to test it precisely myself. You know what I’m thinking of right now? I’m thinking of taking apart that $4 Harbor Freight mosquito swatter, wire up a permanent power supply and try energizing the plates with that, or any of a number of other high voltage sources like stun guns, a Cockcroft Walton voltage multiplier, or a Marx multiplier, something I could find or make.
